Pre- Assessment for Differentiation
1st conditionals for oral ESL class
Tracking progress
The 12 students who have some knowledge about the topic as shown in their score, but need to develop higher order thinking skills
Re-Teach Grammar Points
with these 12 students + the other 5 students with limited knowledge
Tools for Assessment #1:
5 Fingers
(Students will use their fingers to rate their understanding 1-5.
Tools for Assessment #2
Thumbs up/Thumbs Down
Teacher will show correct and incorrect examples of the 1st conditional. If students give a sentence the "thumbs down," then they must verbally correct it.
Story Chain Task
Students will be separated from the 5 students with limited knowledge. They will be put into 3 groups of 4 and will create a written and spoken story chain.

online quizzes
Students with the most knowledge
The 5 students who answered most, including the most difficult, of the pre-assessment questions correctly
Conditional Quizzes
Students will do online quizzes to show competence in the 1st-3rd conditionals
Deserted Island Scenario
Following, students will do a video recording of a deserted island scenario where they must use all the conditionals to describe how they would survive.

-Exit/Entry Slips about project task and participation

Tools for Assessment:
Students will email their results to the teacher, or print them out and hand them in. They will not be graded on them, but all members must get 80% to move forward.
Students with limited or zero knowledge
5 students who appear to have limited knowledge about the topic, of which 3 are struggling with language and are at different reading levels and 2 students who have little to no comprehension of the the topic and need to be tested further for special needs
Re-teaching Grammar Points
These students will go through this with the middle 12 students.
Small Group Visual Conditionals
In this small group of 5, the teacher will do a coached speaking activity using highly visual cards
Tools for Assessment:
This is a pass/fail (non-graded) activity. Students are either able to do this after coaching, or not.
Memory/Visual Story Chain
The 3 students who are struggling with language should be able to use the visual cards to create model sentences. At this point they are released to work on their own. They can change the game to play "Memory" or use the cards to create a story chain.
Tools for Assessment:
-Students can keep a tally of wins/losses for all 3 students
-Students can take photos of their progress on their story chain
-Students can create vocabulary banks to help them learn the visuals
Intensive Coaching
The 2 students who are unable to make progress in the small group of 5 will now work directly with the teacher, using a combination of visual, audial, and/or kinesthetic tools.
Tools for Assessment:
-Physically moving about the classroom to show cause and effect
-Giving listening examples of proper 1st conditional sentences in context
-Using the visual cards with writing
Students who make no progress after this point will likely need to be referred to a specialist. This will be discussed with the students' other teachers, school administration and parents.
