Hardwere and operating systems
1 Computer language and function
ASCII
This is know as the binary system
1.1 Computer functions
Software or programs refer to the data and the instrutions we use to:
Processing data the central prorcessing unit (CPU) using the
micropocesor and the memory.
Input of data using peripheral devices
Storing data in the storage devices.
Output ut of data using peripheral devices
2 Computer elements
2.2 Memory and units of storage
Cache memory
RAM cannot work at the same speed as the microprocessor, so a much faster memory is installed between the RAM and the microprocessor: the cache memory
ROM BIOS
When you turn un your computer,it automatically check the system. This is initial check is carried out using intrucctions stored in a special read- only the memory: the ROM BIOS
RAM
The computer's main memory is its RAM
Storage devices
We use data storage units tu permanently safe this data
2.3 Motherboard and connecting devices
Connecting external device
We can physicagy connect devices to the computer in differebt ways.
2.1 Microprocessor
Computer history is very closely Iinked to the development of integrated circuits or chips.
3 Software and operating systems
-
Applications
Presentation
Database management tools
Sipreadsheets
Drawing programs
Word processors
Programming languages
These programs can be use to create other programs and applications
Operating system
Manages the system resources making them available for use by the user and the applications
Functions of the operating system
Manages the memory and storage systems
Provides and interface or working environment
Manages the microprocessor
Commumcauon between applications and peripheral
devices
4 Windows operating system
Hard disk maintenance
Defragmenting the hard disk.
Detecting and reparing errors
Cleaning the hard disk

6 Computer network
.
metropolitan areas networks
wide areas networks
local area networks or LANs
6.1 Elements in a networs
All computer networks have a logical component
Coaxial cable
Fibre optic cable
RJ45 connector
6.2 Wireless networks
All comnputers need to have a wireless network card. Wireless networks know as WlANs
