Student Support Network
Main Purpose
To help students that have had a really hard time during the pandemic and give a space for co-learning with peers.
Sub-purposes
-
Explain academic material in student-lingo, with entertaining language rather than the usual soul-sucking textbooks.
Share studying tools and resources created/found by students like quizlets, note cards, etc.
Logistics
Necessary resources
Proposal for SSN-> full detailed report on it and what it will essentially be (mimic proposal styles done for SLS)
Approved
-
-
Establish framework-> create simple guideline/agenda for team of students to understand, so will be able to execute SSN
-
Form a team of students who will carry it out-> 6-10 students per grade level and +2 students per course (?)
-
Create a google sheet with grade levels, courses, and assignments and have students sign up for course (should their be deadlines for when review guides should be ready?)
-
-
A hub, website, or simple google folder will be needed to store the documents.
A google form, survey, or queuing system that allows user students to request explanations of past assignments and notifies delegates assigned to the course that there is a request.
Launching SSN
Start with only one grade to test run the ideas and mechanics behind it and see if we can actually see positive results. Improve on the idea from the first grade level, possibly 11th or another.
Need to have data on which courses/assignments are in demand, will need to have team of students ready to create the review and study material
-
Establish a routine: agenda for months created, with roles and tasks
Leadership
CRSJ staff moderated
CRSJ staff/faculty members or even SLS could be in charge of kick-starting this initiative. They could moderate volunteer delegates, help run the sites/documents, and make sure there is no cheating transpiring, etc.
Student Leadership Society, Academic Counseling
Student led
Volunteer delegates from each course would be in charge of writing explanations and answering questions about given assignments. If there are no volunteers from a course then there will be no SSN resources for that course which will hopefully prompt students to volunteer and reap the benefits. Or, this will keep us from using energy on courses that are doing well already.
Delegates would have to be well-performing students who prove to be reliable sources of information and can commit to supporting their peers
Delegates will need to keep in mind language usage that promotes learning and does not put others down for needing help or experiencing confusion over a subject.
What this is
Like Wikipedia, but for CRSJ: A student led and student run initiative to create review and study material for students that are struggling or just uncertain about class work. Through the SSN, volunteer delegates from each course type will be approved to create explanations of assignments that students struggled on. They will create these explanations on google docs. The assignments will be explained upon request of students as to avoid having to do all assignments. All explanation documents would be contained in a folder or perhaps website from which students could access materials they need more explanation on. The documents would be organized by grade level, then by course. Assignments will only be eligible for explanation after their due dates have passed, so as to avoid cheating. Students using the resources will be encouraged to leave comments for the delegates with questions about certain aspects of the assignments, allowing for more learning and interaction.
Areas of Concern
-
-
Will this truly be helping students? Will it be inspiring/pushing them to learn and make connections? or will this prosper laziness and cheating? Will this enable bad student habits? Unfair to students that are sacrificing time to help and those who are truly seeking to learn and are really struggling. However, even if theirs a risk it's value and helpfulness outweigh the cons and uncertainty
