Law
Key skills you might need for a career in Law:
Empathetic to some extent - Clients should not feel like the legal profession is too disconnected, but lawyers must also maintain a level of professionalism and not become too emotionally invested.
Intellect
Must be highly motivated especially if there is a high workload
Accuracy and attention to detail - Work/research must be thoroughly checked to avoid wasting others time with unnecessary mistakes.
Able to work in a team as well as independently
Good communication skills with clients but also with co-workers
Effective time management
Skills or attributes that you feel you already have that would suit this career:
Diligent - I am currently in Y12 preparing to take 3 A levels. On top of that I am also re-learning to speak Japanese.
Perceptive - English has made me realise that not everything is clear, sometimes you must read between the lines and make your own judgement.
Good time management - I used to train 10hrs a week in gymnastics as well as fitting in school work and a social life.
Written communication skills - I am currently taking an A Level in English Literature. I feel that my written style has evolved recently to sound more professional and coherent
What do I already know about the industry?
The difference between a solicitor and barrister:
Solicitor - Usually handles legal things in an office outside a court (employed by law firms)
Barrister - Usually handles legal matters in court and are called on by solicitors for assistance in their case
Research is a fundamental part in law.
Law is not just about money and self gain - it is also about helping others and putting in a lot of hard work.
My main interests for a career in Law:
Helping others that could potentially not be able to access sufficient help.
In the future I would like to participate in some pro bono cases.
I have two particular interests in Law:
Property Law
- Housing is something most people have to deal with in their adult life. I would like to make the lives of movers a little less stressful where possible in the future.
Criminal Law
- As well as the laws behind the justice system, the psychology behind the crimes also interests me greatly eg. Why do people commit crimes? How could they be prevented?
