2021/22 ideas: Community engagement and housing retrofit (green economic recovery)
Community engagement
COP26: Together for our planet
Climate Assemblies guidance - how to run a local one - views from national and local assemblies and citizens' juries
Climate torch - showcase best practice in the five COP26 themes each week in a different local area- good. A quiz in each area with local people?
Sponsorship for climate challenge (like LGchallenge) as part of COP26 run up - best youth idea to tackle climate change in your local area. Collaborate with the BBC on their education campaign? (Ashden done something similar - duplication?/LGA encroaching on council's space and community engagement)
Behaviour change green online resource - working with councils to implement this - training sessions
Multimedia/interactive/podcast/videos (not e learning - good): A Good Training Course on How to Communicate with the wider public and residents and how this topic affects everyone. Potential other series on other topics e.g green finance and local gov pensions
Support for Councillors on making climate changes in their local communities. Featuring Councillors telling their story to inspire other Councillors e.g it is hard but there is light at the end
From the 6th carbon budget: deliver a national climate communications and public engagement programme that can be tailored at a local level. It will support local delivery of shared national objectives.
See COP24 community engagement work - framing in those terms
What does the public understand about climate change (part of a podcast?)? e.g personal changes are needed in their own lifestyle - social class conscious - need to work with personal economic circumstances. How do we educate people? Sell the co benefits.
Sharing apps for waste reduction - Fairshare, collective buying for big discounts. Repair centres. Tip shop (Linking to personal finances). Second hand - remove the shame from buying second hand. composting, electric charging point locations
Community groups, food banks - link in. What can we learn from COVID-19 and community spirit?
As councils, we need to be enablers to help councils make the right decisions - break it down into sections/podcast episodes e.g as the council, we can help you (resident) reduce your waste, retrofit your house
Housing (green jobs and economic recovery)
Retrofitting housing - decision-making tools to assess how policies/projects etc contribute to emissions reductions/increase and resilience
Creating apprenticeships for green jobs
Matching construction students/apprentices with councils
Into green jobs campaign (akin to the social work one which LGA have run)
Metro Mayors have responsibility for the skills agenda - policy development. Building standards policies. Green building fund.
Retraining of existing builders to meet building standards
Promoting easy swaps - social norming - encourage people to retrofit their house by highlighting the benefits, using behaviour change e.g clear diagram on cost savings and time
Promote the eco friendly options e.g swap insulation options for eco friendly ones
Making it easier for builders to sign up to green homes work. What have councils done to get green homes construction working?
Skills in house to retrofit our own stock e.g Oxford council have set up an arm who will work on private households.
