the oldest surviving epic poem
in the English language

there Beowulf succeeds in mortally wounding a
monster
that has been terrorising the king and his men for 12 years.

and fights against the monster's mother
the last part of the poem takes place in
the land of the Geats in Sweden
there Beowulf confronts a
dragon
Beowulf was composed as an
elegy
for a king who died in 7 century
but it was written down in the
11 century
Beowulf describes a
warrior society
in which the relationship between the leader and his warrioris is founded on
loyalty
the poem is an
epic
becuase the settings of the story covers
vast lands
and
far off places
the struggles the poem describes are the challenges of
good against evil
Beowulf contains the elements of the
epic poem
there's a lot of
repetition
the
language is elevated
and there're
long lists
lots of
alliteration
Beowulf has two
heroic qualities
he has an incredible
physical strength
he has the ability to put people's welfare before his own
