Global Peace Keepers : The 5 Organs
The Economic and Social Council
Brings countries and organization together to efficiently carry out economic, social and environmental activities all over the world . The council has 54 members who are elected by the General Assembly for a period of 3 years .
The United Nations Economic and Social Council is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations, responsible for coordinating the economic and social fields of the organization, specifically in regards to the fifteen specialized agencies, the eight functional commissions and the five regional commissions under its jurisdiction.
General Assembly
General Assembly is the closest thing to the 'World Parliament'. It comprises 193 members of the UN. Each country has a single vote.
The general assembly meets every year and the members vote to take decisions on any international problem.
In addition, it passes the budget of the UN, collects reports from the other organs of the UN and elects the non-permanent members of the Security Council.
The Secretariat
The Secretariat, one of the main organs of the UN, is organized along departmental lines, with each department or office having a distinct area of action and responsibility. Offices and departments coordinate with each other to ensure cohesion as they carry out the day to day work of the Organization in offices and duty stations around the world.
