Paper 2 - Writing
Time allocation: 2 hours. 50 total marks.
Two sections, candidates must answer question 1 in Section A (compulsory), and one question in section B.
Section A: Shorter writing and reflective commentary. Candidates are required to write a short text (<400 words) in response to a prompt and then write a reflective commentary based on how the their response fulfils the brief.
Section B: Extended writing. Candidates choose to answer one out of three questions, with each question corresponding to one of the three following categories: imaginative/descriptive, discursive argumentative, and review/critical. In each question, candidates are required to produce a continuous piece of writing 600-900 words long.
Examples of the text types that candidates may be required to produce:
advertisements, brochures, leaflets, editorials, news stories, articles, reviews, blogs, investigative journalism, letters, podcasts, (auto)biographies, travel writing, diaries, essays, scripted speech, narrative writing, and descriptive writing.

In both papers, candidates are required to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the conventions of a wide range of written textual forms, the linguistic elements and literary features of texts, the significance of audience in both the design and reception of texts, and the ways in which genre, purpose, and context contribute to the meaning of texts.
Paper 1 - Reading
Time allocation: 2 hours, 15 minutes. 50 total marks
Two compulsory questions.
Section B: Text analysis. Candidates are required to comment on the form, structure, and language of a text.
Section A: Directed response. In question 1a, candidates are required to write a directed response of 150-200 words. In question 2a, candidates are required to identify and analyse the features of the text and relate these to the purpose, audience, and context of the texts.
In both sections, the text that are required to be read by candidates are 550-750 words long.
