BMD Evaluation!
Flawed evidence:
-
- Bowlby himself carried out the family interviews and assessments for affectionless psychopathy.
- This could cause Bowlby to be biased as he knew in advance which teenagers he expected to show signs of psychopathy.
- Bowlby's original source of evidence for maternal deprivation was Goldfarb.
- However, Goldfarb's study contained serious flaws and has problems of confounding variables because the children experienced early trauma and institutional care as el as prolonged separation from their primary caregivers.
However...
Levy et al 2003.
- Showed that if you separate baby rats from their mother even for a day it has serious social long term effects.
- Despite relying on flawed evidence their is still evidence to back him up.
Bifulco et al 1992.
- They studied 250 women who had lost their mother, through separation or death, before they were 17.
- They found that the loss of their mother through separation or death doubles the risk of depressive and anxiety disorders in adult women.
- The rate of depression was the highest in women whose mothers had died before the child reached the age of 6.
- This supports Bowlby's notion of a critical period!
However...
Jarmila Koluchova 1976.
- She reported the case of two Czech twins.
- They twins experienced serve emotional and physical abuse.
- Although, this caused great damage after they excellent care and by 18 they had fully recovered.
- This means that lasting harm is not inevitable even in cases of severe privation.
- The critical period should be instead called the 'sensitive period.'
Correlational Data:
- The 44 thieves study only shows a relationship between these two variables.
- External variables, such as family conflict, parental income, education may have affected the behavior of the thieves.
- These external variables were not taken into consideration.
Rutter (1972) pointed out, Bowlby’s conclusions were flawed, mixing up cause and effect with correlation.
Real World Application.
- Bowlby's study had a massive impact on post-war thinking about childbearing and how children should be looked after in hospital.
- Before visiting children in hospital was discouraged but after one of Bowlby's colleagues, James Robertson, filmed a two year old girl over eight days being increasingly distressed.
- It caused major social change in the ways children were cared for in hospitals.
Conflicting Evidence.
- Attempts to recreate the 44 thieves study have failed to produce similar results.
- Hilda Lewis looked at 500 young people and found no association between early separation and later psychopathy.
However...
- Gao et al 2010 found that poor quality maternal care was associated with high rates of psychopathy in adults.
