Bourbon Dynasty
Ruled France during the revolution
Founded in 987 by Hugh Capet
In 1328 no heir to the throne so it passed on to Valious (a Cousin) and started the Valois Dynasty
After he died in 1589 throne was passed onto Henry IV - The first french monarch of the Bourbon Dynasty
Bourbon Dynasty ruled until the 1792 overthrow of the monarchy during the French Revolution
Absolute Monarchy (ABSOLUTISM)
What/Role
The monarch had complete control over political power, economics, and all forms of authority.
The monarch had absolute control over the society which involved people being placed into different estates of power
French Revolution
The absolute monarchy of Louis XVI and resentment that French citizens felt towards the authority of the king
The Church
Only accountable to god and the catholic church who let them get away with anything
Power given to them by the Catholic church
Louis XIV
Louis the XIV was a very respected ruler amongst the French population and had a very successful reign
Provided reform administration of justice and promoted commerce and industry, including the development of overseas colonies
Some historians argue that King Louis XIV contributed to the beginning of the revolution
He failed to reform the government institution whilst the monarchy was still secure
By the time Louis XVI became king the power of the monarchy had declined and was struggling to overcome the government resistance
Louis XVI
Louis XVI is a weak and indecisive ruler – who was notorious for “overspending” and wasn't respected
He realised the need for government reform because of the bad finances but there wasn't much he could do, so he tried to force a physical policy that failed
Absolute Monarchy of Louis XVI
In the years before the French Revolution, the people of France began to question the authority of Louis XVI and his absolute monarchy
New ideas during the Age of Enlightenment, caused people to consider other forms of government based on the ideas of equality and liberty, which went against the rule of the king.
French citizens resented his authority and the history of the absolute monarchy in France which led to people revolting in 1789 at the outbreak of the French Revolution
