The Poor - Negative:
18% of white American's lived in poverty.
56% of African American's lived in poverty.
Most of the people who lived in poverty were in the south and the better off were living in the north.
68% of people over 65 had an income of less than $1000 in a time when an average factory worker was earning over $40000.
Consumerism/ Economy
1952 - Eisenhower became President and he brought lots of business people into the government to keep the economy going.
Living standards and wages increased/ got better.
Bill passed to help young veterans get to schools and universities.
Made hospitals an established cheap home. 1941 - 1949 9 million veterans received $4 billion from the government.
Europe was devastated by the war and were keen to buy American goods. 1952 America was supplying 65% of manufactured goods.
Women
After the war millions of women who had done demanding and valuable jobs went back to being housewives.
During the war time women's wages were 2/3 of men's
Women were usually employed in female jobs like secretary's, teachers and nurses. Those who went for high flying roles and jobs were usually discriminated against.
The wide spread idea was that a woman's place was in the home and that she was living the American dream if she had the latest cleaning gadgets.
The Poor - Positive:
Truman's "fair deal" raised the minimum hourly wage from 40 cents to 75 cents.
Truman also made way for affordable housing by clearing large sums of money.
