Ch. 18 Population Genetics & Evolution, Cross-Link Connection:Severe…
-
Cross-Link Connection:Severe drought in 2011 and heat resulted in wild fires all across Texas. In the eastern almost all the trees were killed by these fires but in west Texas many plants were damaged but only a few died. These plants that survived have different genes that allowed them to withstand the heat. After the fire the gene pool will differ from what it was like before.
Cross-Link Connection: The summer of 1988 produced a severe drought that under normal conditions would have resulted in natural selection of drought-resistant plants. Natural selection did not occur however because there is no genetic variability among corn plant. Corn is highly inbred and is produced through careful crosses of uniform parents.
Cross-Link Connection: Even though many animals will carry the fruits of the holly (llex vomitoria) most of its seeds fall and germinate in its neighborhood. Problem is there are too many seedlings to fit into the space physically causing the tree to produce seeds abundantly for many years,
