Intersectionality in Development
Intersectionality Defined
Gender based inequalities are often compounded by inequalities based on class, race, and ethnicity
categories of diadvantage all come together and effect each otherr
race and gender are the "quintessential intersection"
there are still some more mainstream, dated feminists who do not focus on intersectionality in feminism
When thinking of "women in development", it is hard to define globally
There are 4 main critiques of intersectionality: methodology, scale, perceptions of power, and perceived binary between structure and identity
There seems to be no limit to what can be added to intersectionality; does this weaken the impact?
The Female Migrant and Intersectionality
When migration was discussed, women were always thought of as secondary to the cause
working class women have more motivation to make changes for women compared to upper class women or men
Women who migrate struggle to maintain their statues as wives and mothers while also determining their spot in the society
There is the issue of intersectionality not taking the individual into account; not all migrant women have the same expiriences
Are Muslim Women Oppressed?
first hand account (from Egypt) from the article claims that Muslim women are not oppressed because of Islam, but because of the government
Women that the author has met and wrote about all have differing issues and opposite perspectives on most things
After 911, the Westernized view was that Muslin women needed help and only narratives about their struggle were popularized in the west
"TIME" published an article that showed a woman who's face had been mutilated by in Afghanistan and it perpetuated the myth that all women there are treated this way
Westernized women can feel superior and sorry for Muslim women? This is a sect of feminism that is rooted in backwards ideals
Cultural Explanations
there seems to be more emphasis on the religion of the Afghan region when discussing oppression, rather than cultural, repressive, regimes, and how the U.S. has contributed to both aspects
Notable figures from the West have spoken and discussed about how there Middle East needs saving... essentially from themselves
Western view concludes that women are opressed because they have to wear a burqa, when in fact, it is a cultural garment that can mean many positive things to communities and indivuduals
There needs to be an accurate awareness of the differences in paths towards social change- not every community does it the same way
"we have become politicized about race and class, but not culture"
