Tropical Rainforests
Water cycle
Components of the water cycle:
bodies of water,
e.g. rivers, lakes,
the land,
the atmosphere
-
Evaporation rates are high.
This is because the sun is usually overhead so it's always hot.
High evaporation rates mean there's lots of water vapour, so rainfall is high
Vegetation is dense, so lots of water is intercepted and stored by plants
Nutrient Cycle
-
Trees are evergreen, so dead leaves and other material fall all year round
The warm, moist climate means that fungi and bacteria decompose the dead organic matter quickly, releasing nutrients into the soil.
Rainwater soaks into the soil and the nutrients are dissolved in the water
Dense vegetation and rapid plant growth mean that the nutrient-rich water is rapidly taken up by plants' roots
Plants absorb nutrients from the soil and use them to grow
Animals eat plants, taking in the nutrients they contain
Plants drop their leaves
Animals and plants die and decompose, returning nutrients to the soil
-
Rainforest Soils
Low in nutrients
Often very deep but they have a very thin fertile layer and are generally nutrient poor
Comes as a result of high temperatures and high rainfall
Hot wet climate means that chemical weathering is rapid
This means that there is usually a deep layer of soil- the bedrock can be up to 30m below the surface
Trees drop leaves all year round - constant supply of dead leaves and twigs falling onto the soil surface, forming a thick leaf layer

Polar Environments
The Arctic
-
Climate
Average summer temperatures are less than 10 deg C and winter temperatures are about -20degC to -40degC
-
Land and Sea features
Majority of Arctic is made up of ocean, which has lots of drifting pack ice and icebergs
Sea ice extends further in winter
On land there are mountainous regions, areas that are permanently covered with snow and ice (permafrost), and areas of treeless tundra (where only a surface layer of soil thaws each summer).
Flora
Low-growing shrubs,
lichen,
moss,
some flowering plants,
e.g. Arctic poppy
Fauna
Whales,
seals,
fish,
wolves,
polar bears,
reindeer,
caribou,
lots of birds
Antarctica
Climate
Antarctica is colder than the Arctic. Summer temperatures are usually -20degC to -5degC and winter temperatures can reach almost -90deg c
-
Land and Sea Features
Antarctica is a land mass which is 99% covered with an ice sheet
A few mountains poke up out of the ice, e.g. the Transantarctic Mountains, which run across the continent
The sea freezes in the winter, nearly doubling the size of the continent
-
Fauna
Whales, seals, penguins, sea-birds. All the animals in Antarctica rely on the sea,
