Flowchart of learning disability recognition and pedagalocial differentiation at QuZhou Foreign Language School by: Mitchell Andrisevic
- Teaching children with disabilities
be patient, learning may come slower to your child

Look for opportunities in your community for social, recreational and sports activities (such as Best Buddies or Special Olympics)

When teaching students who have learning disabilities it is important to give them an IEP (individualized education program). This program should be developed together with the group of teachers who teach that student, their parents, coaches and other community leaders.

- If the student is struggling I should ask myself if they are struggling because of a developmental disability/work ethic/behavioral issue/lack of motivation or developmental delay?
If I believe the student is not suffering from a developmental disability and they still aren't doing the work, aren't completing work, or are performing poorly on tests, usually I will talk to them first before recommending they be tested for a learning disability. If the issue is motivation or lack of English then I need to address that in a different way. At this point I will try and determine who needs to be tested and who doesn't need to be.
- Testing for disability. Kind of disability? social? cognitive? emotional? physical?
-
- Get to know students during the first week of school and understand them as a person, what are their interests, hobbies and what do they like to do in their free time. In the first week I will also do a standardized test based on the content to see how much they already know.
- I will begin my course and start with the syllabus and dive into the course content and skills. This is the next possible stage that I can identify a learning disability. I carefully monitor academic progress by keeping grades for all students on all assignments I give them. During the course I will also record comments about how well students are completing the work and this collection of data will give me an idea of who may need to be considered for formal testing to diagnose a learning disability.
