Pre-assessment for Differentiation for Grade 6 ELA before Poetry Unit
Group 3: Students who have demonstrated above standard knowledge
After completion and checking of understanding students produce their own poem in small groups based on the same theme using prescribed poetic elements.
Students work together to identify and analyse the poem with questions to answer.
These students will listen to a song/ poem that will be of a challenging standard.
Progress tracking:
After the class, I will review all of the assessments. These will be recorded into a student learning journal to show learning progress on the goals for each student. Based on these results levelled assignments will be assigned to students.
These students will be divided into pairs or a group of three.
Students will participate in the Kahoot quiz as a form of pre-assessment to gauge students' prior knowledge of poetic devices, structure and figurative language. Based on the results they will be divided into 3 groups
Group: 1 Students who have limited knowledge and 2 language learners
Students will look at isolated examples and will need to identify and explain these poetic elements.
Students will participate in pair activity. Students will match cards to examples of certain concepts
Teacher will spend time with this group reteaching key concepts
Progress tracking:
Students will then use an edpuzzle activity to analyze yet more isolated examples of poetry but individually this time. This activity will be based on popular songs that will help students make connections to learning these concepts and making connections in knowledge. The questions will be similar to those in the pre-assessment and the results will be compared with the original assessment.
For the language learners students will have visual guides for the matching game as well as more one on one time with the teacher for added support. These students will also receive reference sheets to use for the duration of the class.
Group 2: Students who have demonstrated some knowledge
Students play a poetry jeopardy game individually to reinforce their understanding.
Students will move around to different stations when they hear a buzzer. When they change to different poems they will also change groups.
These students will work in small groups to look at leveled poems and identify and explain elements of poetry as well as their comprehension of the themes and meaning. They will change groups and poems 3 times so that they can draw from a larger pool of knowledge.
Students will be divided into homogeneous groups of 3-4 members.
