Mental Models
consists of user beliefs and expectations of the system
made up of pre-conceived ideas about how the system will work before using it.
expectations are influenced by other (popular) websites that users spend more time on.
Metaphors
are conceptual and do not imply physical resemblance

One common approach designers have exploited for controlling complexity is to ground user interface actions, tasks, and goals in a familiar framework of concepts that are already understood (Carroll and Thomas, 1982). Such a framework is called a user interface metaphor. The extensive use of metaphors has had a dramatic impact on user interface design practices.
