In the UK, capital punishment is illegal however, it is still used in countries like China and Egypt as well as many states in the US.
This is the harshest sentence anyone can serve and so is usually used in cases of horrific crimes such as serial murderers and rapists.
The last people to be executed in England were Peter Anthony Allen and Gwynne Owen Evans in 1964 and this was their sentence for committing a murder.
Cutting hands off
This is the idea that if ones hands were cut off, then they would not be able to use them to commit crimes.

This punishment is used against sex offenders, particularly child sex offenders.

Kentucky, US still uses banishment as a punishment for crimes.
