Chem B
Chapter 10-11
-
Factor Label Method - also referred to as the picket fence. Each fraction is an equivalency just like the moles to particles one so we can use it just like these.
-
Chapter 7-8-9
Combination Reaction - Chemical reaction in which two or more substances react to produce a single product.
Combustion Reaction - Oxygen combines with a substance and releases energy in the form of heat and light
-
Single Replacement Reaction - Atoms of one element replace the atoms of another element in a compound.

-
Pauli exclusion principle - states the maximum of two electrons may occupy a single atomic orbital, but only if the electrons have opposite spins
Hund’s rule - states that single electrons iht the same spin must occupy each equal-energy orbital before additional electrons with opposite spins can occupy the same orbital.

Chapter 12-13-14
-
-
Temperature - Although all particles of the same gas have the same mass, they don’t all have the same velocity or kinetic energy. A measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles.
Absolute zero - As temperature goes down the particles slow down. All motion will theoretically stop at absolute zero. Absolute 0 = 0K = -273.15 C.
-
Compression and expansion : Gases expand to fill their containers. Becomes more dense in a smaller container; less dense in a larger container.
Diffusion : As gas particles flow past one another, lighter particles travel more quickly.
-
-
Compression - Requires enormous pressure, produces small volume change.
-
Viscosity - stronger the intermolecular forces, the higher the viscosity; increases with mass; decrease with temperature increase.
-
Critical Point - Shows where it can only be a gas because the temperature and pressure are too high.
-
-
-
-
Surface tension - mesure of the inward pull by particles to the interior of a liquid. Stronger attraction means higher surface tension.
Capillary action - movement up a narrow glass tube. Occurs when adhesion is greater than cohesion.
