The religious wars
In the 16th century the Spanish Monarchy became very powerful under the reign of Carlos I and Felipe II
Carlos and Felipe
Belonged to the Habsburg dynasty
They wanted to exercise absolute political authority with these objectives
To keep their territorial patrimony through numerous wars against other kingdoms
To defend Catholicism
They took measures to preserve religious unity both
In their territories
Their domestic policy was discriminatory
They didn't let descendents of Jews and Muslims gain access to public positions
They repressed those who questioned Catholism and published the Index of forbidden books
In the whole of Europe
They began religiously motivated wars against the Protestants
Economy and society in the 16th century
The port of Sevilla monopolised trade with the colonies
Felipe II organised a fleet system to protect the ships from pirate attacks during the voyages between the Americas and Sevilla
The economy prospered because of the silver and gold obtained from the Americas
This is how the arrival of precious metals on the Peninsula affected the Spanish Monarchy
The craft industry began to increase and prices in Spain rose and because of that it became cheaper to buy products abroad
As the monarch had resources they began more expensive projects
It enriched the nobility but made the population became poorer
The economy continued to be based on agriculture and that made the population became very vulnerable
It enabled the kings to finance the numerous wars
At the end of the 16th century, the Spanish economy went into decline
The major industries disappeared and only small local craft industries survived
The fall in production also affected trade
Because of this, the number of people who had to beg to survive increased
