THEORY OF EVOLUTION
Charle Darwin (1809-1882)
Evolution and natural selection
common ancestors
He had the most convincing theory.
He also believed in adaptation
He believed traits were inherited
Jean-Baptiste Lamarck (1744-1829)
Was a french biologist who is best known for his theory of inheritance of acquired traits (1801).
Body parts disappear if not used.
Acquired traits
giraffes stretched their necks and they grew/became longer.
First to recognize species change over time.
Vocabulary
natural selection
: the process whereby organisms better adapted to their environment tend to survive and produce more offspring.
evolve:
To change heritable traits from one generation to the next.
adaptation:
A heritable trait favored by natural selection for its current function.
Trait
: a specific version of a gene. characteristic that varies from one individual to another
mutation
: A change in the DNA of a gene that may lead to a different trait.
Things they had in common
They both had their separate theories
They both believed that animals had traits.
They both knew that giraffe offspring had longer necks.
both scientists were biologists :
History of Evolution
Evidence of Evolution
Examples of living things that evolved
One of the living thing that evolved is the Galapagos Finch. They have changed their beaks and ways of living. Like how some changes their beaks to get food from cactuses and different foods. Another animal is the giraffe. Over time the giraffe's neck grew longer to get get the food off of tall trees.
Extinction
Long ago, species would go extinct for a variety of reasons. Now animals usually go extinct from humans.
