Geography
Key Concepts
-
Sustainability
Developing ways to ensure the earths resources are being used and managed responsibly so they can be maintained for the future
Environment
The living and the non living components and elements that make up an area and the way they are arranged
-
Change
The earth is constantly changing. These changes can be a result of natural forces and human activity
-
Scale
Geographers study things that take place in many different spatial levels. Use the concept to look for explanations and outcomes at different levels

Causes
Fossil Fuels
Makes up 76% of greenhouse gas emissions
When fossil fuels (coal) are burned they produce carbon dioxide which contributes to the greenhouse effect causing the climate to change
Deforestation
As trees grow they remove and store carbon dioxide from the air
When trees are cut down or burned their stored carbon is released into the air as carbon dioxide
Agriculture/Methane
24% of our GHG emissions
Methane is the 2nd largest contributor to global warming
Produced by livestock (cows, sheep) as they chew their food
Currently 1.4 billion cattle on earth. 1 cow produce 60-80kg of methane each year

Lake Chad
-
Lake Chad was the world’s 6th largest lake in 1963 with a total surface area of 23 thousand square kilometres
2001 this had declined by 75% to only be 300 square kilometres
Decline is due to two factors, climate change and population growth
Population growth impacts the size of the lake because the lake’s water is being used to irrigate their crops and with the population increasing their will be more of a demand for the water because more crops will need to be irrigated. The four surrounding countries’ population are expected to double by 2050 adding another 300 million people to the region.
Climate change has impacted the lake due to the land surrounding Lake Chad drying up because of the increase in temperature, which is also increasing the amount of evaporation going on because of the shallowness of the lake and because of the decrease of heavy rainfall, so there is no new water coming in and the evaporated water isn’t coming back down.
