Actions
Crooks stared hopelessly at her, and then he sat down on his bunk and drew into himself. Steinbeck pg.119
Crooks sat on his bunk and looked at the door for a moment, and then he reached for the liniment bottle. He pulled out his shirt in back, poured a little liniment in his pink palm and, reaching around, he fell slowly to rubbing his back. Steinbeck pg.22
This quote shows that Crooks is belittled by the others on the ranch and that he feels like he has no authority. By drawing into himself it shows his weakness on the ranch
Looks
"His body was bent over to the left by his crooked spine, and his eyes lay deep in his head, and because of their depth seemed to glitter with intensity. His face was lined with deep black wrinkles, and he had thin, pain-tightened lips which were lighter than his face." Steinbeck pg. 105
This quotes shows the whole picture, exactly what Crooks looks like. It talks about everything from the way his back is curved to the way his eyes laid in his head.
Effect on Others
-
This quote shows he doesn't really care about Lennies emotions, that he enjoys teasing him and that has an effect on Lennie. Its not a good one.
Says
-
Crooks continued. “Sometimes he talks, and you don’t know what the hell he’s talkin’ about. Ain’t that so?” He leaned forward, boring Lennie with his deep eyes. “Ain’t that so?” Steinbeck pg.108
The quote above shows that Crooks is lonely. He says that books aren't enough and that having human connection is something he wants. His ethnicity is a big barrier in that
This quote below shows that Crooks doesn't really care for other's emotions. He is straightforward and honest, he doesn't try to sugar coat things.
Thoughts
"Nobody never gets to heaven, and nobody gets no land. It’s just in their head. They’re all the time talkin’ about it, but it’s jus’ in their head." Steinbeck pg.112
"They play cards in there, but I can't play because I'm black. They say I stink." Steinbeck pg.106
The quote above shows Crook's outlook on the way poor working people think that they could ever make it to the top. He thinks that they could not achieve their dreams. He thinks that you have to start at the top to get anything.
This quote below shows that Crooks knows that their is prejudice and he knows to defend himself. He can speak up and he knows that this is wrong.
