Crooks, if I want to. - Coggle Diagram
Crooks
Actions
Crooks stared hopelessly at her, and then he sat down on his bunk and drew into himself. Pg 81
His actions shows how hopeless Crooks is regarding defending himself due to his color, because he converted from a angry man to a almost shy, quiet, hopeless person.
Crooks action of remaining staying low and obeying Curley's wife order shows how invulnerable he is to society, because he knows that even a woman at the time which were also discriminated on at the time has more power than a black male.
Crooks stood up from his bunk and faced her. "I had enough," he said coldly. "You got no rights comin' in a colored man's room. You got no rights messing around in here at all. Now you jus' get out, an' get out quick. If you don't, I'm gonna ast the boss not to ever let you come in the barn no more. Pg 80
It shows that even though Crook is vulnerable, that he is still brave enough to protect his friends
It shows his inferiority amongst white males, because he needs to ask permission to his boss in order to get something.
Says
"If some guy was with me, he could tell me I was asleep, an' then it would be all right. But I ju' don't know."Pg 74.
This dialogue shows a weak side to Crooks, Crooks wishes to have a companionship that he could talk to yet he can't have.
The dialogue also shows a fear that Crooks has, Crooks has the fear of getting attacked while he is asleep and he wishes for better protecting for himself, for example he wants a guardian angel that protects him at all time even when he is asleep.
"Nobody can't tell what a guy'll do," he observed calmly. "Le's say he wants to come back and can't . S'pose he gets killed or hurt so he can't come back." Pg.72
This dialogue of Crooks simulates how crooks is taking the effects of loneliness he makes others feel as if they'll be alone, for them to provide some sympathy for Crooks. Which shows that Crooks yearns for others to understand him, he wants a companion.
This dialogue also shows a dark side of Crooks, Crooks take advantage of someone more vulnerable as him, in order for him to feel a sense of superiority that he wishes to have for his selfish desire.
Crooks is an observant person he can tell even based of Lennie's tough appearance that Lennie is a dumb, childish fella, and he even knows the weaknesses of his those around him.
Thoughts
-
"It wasn't nothing," Crooks said dully. "You guys comin' in an' settin' made me forget. What she says is true."Pg.82
We can't characterized Crooks as depressed but we could characterized Crooks as a broken man, when Crooks dreams off living a life without discrimination he is relatively happy, yet when someone mentions that he is a colored man he reverts back to his sense that he is hopeless due to his color.
Looks
"This is just a
n* talkin', an' a busted-back n*". Pg.71
Reveals how crooks is a black man, so in society he is viewed with discrimination.
Due to his busted back we can determine that by others looking at Crooks he is also faced with being looked at inferior.
Effects on Others
Crooks said irritably, "You can come in if you want." Candy seemed embarrassed. "I do' know. 'Course, if ya want me to." Pg 75
Crooks affect on others is making other people around him hesitant in approaching him. They are aware that he is colored but is a strong person which grants him a bit of respect to from Candy.
We can assume that because people are hesitant of Crooks, is that Crooks is a quiet, strong willed, & yet respectful person. This is because if Crook were not to be a respectful person or strongwilled we would see that Candy were to talk down on Crook, which gives Candy a sort of respect to Crooks.
Crooks also has an effect on others on making them afraid of Crooks, afraid not because he is a scary person but because he is a colored person. And because the setting of the Mice of Men has a lot of discrimination among black folks people are afraid of becoming friends with Crooks.
Possesions
"Crooks possessed several pairs of shoes, a pair of rubber boots, a big alarm clock and a single-barreled shotgun. And he had books, too; a tattered dictionary and a mauled copy of the California civil code for 1905. There were battered magazines and a few dirty books on a special shelf over his bunk. A pair of large gold-rimmed spectacles hung from a nail on the wall above his bed." Pg.68
Crooks alarm clock, shows that he is a responsible person because he tries to wake up on time to perform duties which also shows that he is a hard-worker.
Crooks tattered dictionary represents that Crooks is a well informed man, not only that though because Crooks has a mauled copy of the California civil code of 1905 which dictates human rights. It shows that Crooks is aware of his situation as a black man meaning that he is vulnerable to a lot of problems, so he tends to be well informed on how he can protect himself in order to be safe.
The large gold-rimmed spectacles could represent that Crooks is intelligent because he can read books, or it could represent that Crooks is a sort of a hoarder, spectacles at the time were considered for the wealthy especially gold rimmed ones meaning that Crooks might of just found a spectacle that was thrown away and he kept it to himself. Another theory is that Crooks like to be fashionable & he has self-respect for himself & likes to feel nice.
The single-barreled shotgun can mean that Crooks is afraid of the outside world he wants to feel safe with a gun, because he is facing a lot of discrimination because he is a black man. Furthermore, we are aware that Crooks is afraid of what could happen to him because he also has a California Civil Rights Document meaning that Crooks wants to be very informed on what type of rights he has so that he can at least protect himself.
Environment
had his bunk in the harness room; a little shed that leaned off the wall of the barn. On one side of the little room there was a square four-paned window, and on the other, a narrow plank door leading into the barn. Crooks' bunk was a long box filled with straw, on which his blankets were flung. Pg.67
Crooks home represents how society viewed colored people they were viewed as animals, Crooks for example lived in a tiny shed next to a barn which wouldn't even makes sense for a human to live their but because Crooks is colored he is perceived as a "animal".
Crooks home is like an animals home, yet crooks lives their meaning that he didn't rebel at all. This shows that even though crooks faces a lot of discrimination he is a strong willed person for even living and working at the ranch.
