Origin of the Universe
The Big Bang Theory
-
-
In a fraction of a second, it grew from smaller than an atom to all of the galaxies, stars and planets that exist today.
It's still growing, and the proof is the red-shift telling us that distant stars are moving away as the light is getting redder.
Christian Creation Story
-
The universe begins with darkness and emptiness then God said "Let there be light!" and light appeared. Then he makes the sky. On the third day, God puts water into the sea and land forms. On day four, the sun and moon are put in place next to the stars. Then he puts birds in the sky and fills the sea with creatures. On the sixth day, he populates the world with animals then humans in his own image, giving them the world to look after. He rests on the seventh day.
Fundamentalists take the story literally as they believe the Bible made no mistakes as it is the world of God.
Liberalists instead look for the deeper meaning, therefore they could also believe in the Big Bang theory as this could be God's method of creating the world.

Value of the world
Awe - a feeling of respect, mixed feelings of fear and wonder. Feeling amazed and scared but also respecting something.
Wonder - Marvelling at the complexity and the beauty of the universe. Thinking about how vast and beautiful the universe is.
The sense of awe and wonder leads some people to believe the world must have a designer and not by chance so must be made by God.

Animal testing
One Christian belief is that animal testing can happen as human lives are more important. They think "Man is made in the image of God" and therefore we have supremacy over animals.
A contrasting Christian belief is that we have to look after our animals and respect them and testing on them is cruel. This is Stewardship of "Till and keep the land." and they believe you need to keep animals from harm.

Origin of humans
Christian Creation Story
Found in the book of Genesis. God made Adam using soil and then he breathed life into him. Adam was given the important job of having Stewardship over God's creation.
God saw that Adam was lonely so he created animals. He was still lonely so when he was sleeping, God took one of his ribs and formed the first woman called Eve.
Adam and Eve were given the Garden of Eden to use but were not allowed to eat from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil.

Liberalists look for the deeper meaning and believe religion tells us why and science tells us how, therefore they can also believe in evolution.
Theory of Evolution
-
All life has evolved from single celled organisms and over a long period of time, living organisms became more complex. Some were able to survive on land as well as sea and some developed the ability to fly.
Species change due to gene mutations, which gave some animals an advantage which increases their chance of survival and these are then passed on to their offspring. The creatures best adapted to the environment are most likely to survive, which is known as survival of the fittest.
-
The evidence for evolution is fossils, which shows how species have changed over time. This process took millions of years. Humans are thought to have started evolving 2.5 million years ago. Therefore, humans are no different from animals and have the same purpose to survive and pass on our genes.
