Romeo and Juliet Themes (all of this was written from memory to see how much I knew)
Love
How is love portayed
Love is portrayed in many different ways and is shown as a concept far deeper than expressed on the surface. Love can be shown as toxic by the Queen Mab speech performed by Mercutio, The courtly love felt by Paris as a way for power and popularity, the unfamiliar parental love by the parents and the romantic and obsessive love between the two lovers
Courtly
This isn't really love. Paris expresses romantic love for Juliet however has never once met her. This shows how there could be an extra motive below the surface
This is contradicted and almost villainised by the romantic love normally associated with the word in the play
Toxic Love
this is one part of a very large piece of the play. Right from the beginning as we see the toxicity of the emotions held by Romeo to the end where the lovers are brought to such pain they take their life. It is powerful as it shows how easy it is to lose who you are and everything you care about to such an emotion synonymous with joy
Queen Mab also expresses this as it is described as a curse of sorts
Romantic love
The love felt by Romeo and Juliet is a powerful one that brought so much joy, yet an incomprehensible amount of pain. As the lovers meet by chance. defy who they are and repulse fate by taking their own lives due to being in the right place at the wrong time
Its powerful as we are shown how truly fragile our protagonists are and how easily they can fall victim to a plan for higher plans
Quotes
"With Cupid’s arrow. She hath Dian’s wit"
If love be rough with you, be rough with love"
"Under love's heavy burden do I sink."

The parents (parental and unfamiliar)
Mercutio (Mab)

Family honour
How is this portrayed
This is shown through the many fights scattered throughout the play, displaying the utter, raw hatred shared among the two families. This is also slightly shown through Juliet's quote "My only love sprung from my only hate" expressing that she has grown up to hate the Montagues
Tybalt hunting down Romeo after the party is another example as it displays how he feels obligated to get revenge for such a tyrannous act of defiance upon his family
The opening scenes display how the families lower groups follow these feelings a very loyal manner

"Do you bite your thumb at us sir"

Conflict
How is it portrayed
There are two sides to conflict throughout the play. The physical combat and hate between the two house holds and also the conflict between the characters and fate
Romeo spends large portions of the play attempting to avoid and repulse his fate. He tries to live his own man and defy the higher powers, however this may be. The deaths of the main characters are a staple to this as they attempt to escape their fate of being condemned to a life without their loved ones. A punishment of marrying against their parents will.
There are also many intricate parts of the physical theme of conflict. This is due to the many well developed characters and their ideals.
The families are of course the main aspect of this. Being at war for such a long time, both have forgotten what to fight for. This is what led to such mindless fighting. and due to this, it took something so dramatic to end it. The fighting for the honour of Tybalt, the desperate revenge due to the hasty nature from Romeo and the hatred of the parents, all came top a close from the incomparable loss
Some however, attempted to stop the pain and bloodshed, Prince did this by creating strict laws and rules for them to follow and Friar Lawrence did the same by attempting to create love an bondage between the families
Quotes
'Ancient grudge break to new mutiny'
"I defy you stars"
"Turn thee Benvolio, look upon thy death"
'My only love spring from my only hate'
'There lies more peril in thine eye'

Fate
How is fate portrayed
It is portrayed almost like a character in itself, like a person they talk to, refer to and interact with. Like something capable of changing the world around it. This is powerful as iot also shows religious themes as well. This is overall one of the main themes due to it being so heavily shown through all Acts of the play changing and effecting the world
The personification of fate throughout the play creates a strong sense of the real struggle experienced by these characters especially the lovers who were torn apart

Juliet

"O, I am fortune's fool!"
