Religion
Christianity was brought to Ethiopia in the 4th century.
The decision to adopt Christianity was probably influenced by a desire to strengthen ties with the Roman Empire.
Love of Christianity
Christianity afforded the possibility of unifying the diverse ethnic and linguistic peoples of Ethiopia.
Stelae obelisks were massive structures decorate with false doors and windows to give the impression of a palace. They were used to mark graves.
They were held up by massive underground counterweights
One of Ethiopia's greatest achievements was the creation of 11 linked underground churches at Laibela in the 12th century in an attempt to create a new Jerusalem on Ethiopian soil.
They carved the churches out of stone, they had no machinery at the time so they simply carved the churches into shape in the ground.
Ethiopia has one of the most extreme baptisms in the world.
Families take their babies on their backs as they climb a cliff 400 meters above the valley floor to reach a church at the top to be baptized.
Biet Giyorgis is the most impressive of the churches.
History
Ancient and powerful kingdom of Aksum.
Considered one of the greatest kingdoms comparable to Rome and other such kingdoms and empires.
Aksums location provided the opportunity to trade with people all across the world through the Red Sea. It was a hub for caravans.
They exported salt, rhinoceros horns, tortoise shells, ivory, emeralds, and gold.
Traders from Egypt, Arabia, Persia, India, and the Roman Empire visited the kingdoms chief seaport Adulis to trade commodities.
Aksum and Rome had a spiritual connection through their shared commitment to Christianity. They were also connected through monetary value, ships from Rome docked weekly at Adulis to trade. They primarily traded gold, which Rome needed badly to support and finance the monetary system of their growing empire.
Ethiopia was never colonized by any countries or kingdoms in Europe. As such they have been around for 2,000 years.
