Causes of the Rebellion
The Protestant Ascendancy = the wealthy landowning minority. They owned 80% of the land but were only 15% of the population.
Only Church of Ireland members could vote and become MPs.
The Penal Laws were set up to suppress the status of Catholics in Ireland. Catholics were not allowed to do certain things like:
- Vote or sit in Parliament.
- Catholic priests were banned.
- Catholics could not attend school.
The Impact of the American and French Revolution: People in Ireland were inspired by the ideas of freedom and equality.
