ACTIVITIES TO TEACH GRAMMAR
Charts and graphs
Teaching tenses
The teacher prepare bar chart and sentences written on piece of paper. The graph chart will be divided into three; simple, past and future. The graph chart is stick to the whiteboard.
The students will work in groups of three and use the sentences on the graph. Each person in the group will taking turns to answer. The students will go to the front class and take out the sentence.
The students read the sentences aloud and choose the right space to answer it. The group members could lend a hand to the members who are trying to answer the chart.
After all students are done taking turns, the teacher will check the answers together and revise the tenses again.
Reason:
With the following activity, the teacher would like to show to the students how charts are described
The teacher would like to test the students understanding on tenses.
Objects and things
Teaching adjective using realia
This activity need student to come up to the front classroom and put his/her hand inside the box. Inside the box, there are different types of objects.
Student need to describe the object from the texture, shape
Other students will try to guess what is the object based on the adjective used.
Lucky dip
Teaching countable and uncountable nouns
Teacher brings things such as sugar milk, oil, books, fruits, ball to show the characteristics of these thing to students and asking them to categorise it into countable or uncountable nouns later.
Maps and drawings
Teaching prepositional location and direction using map
Getting around the town
Students being in a group work together to locate place using map given by teacher. In the map given, there is instruction and clue on the position of place.
Use the map to do fill in the gap activity by asking students to guess the suitable preposition of location to fill in the blanks.
Songs and nursery rhymes
Teaching vocabulary using song
The teacher prepares video or audio based on the students’ textbook. Then teacher plays video or audio for students 2 or 3 times to make the students familiar with new words in the song and they sing a song with the teacher.
The teacher guides the students to learn the meaning of new words deeply and clearly.
Teacher gives the students worksheet and then teacher asks students corrected the worksheet.
Finally, teacher and students sing a song again. The problem faced by the teacher during the use of song for teaching vocabulary is students do not know the meaning of vocabulary in the song.
Games
Heads up
This hilarious game is an excellent interactive tool to use when teaching an adult ESL course. The game encourages students to use a variety of verb tenses and descriptive vocabulary.
The game can be played with as many teams of two as you have in your class. To play, one team member holds the smart device or index card to their forehead.
This student does not know what is written on the card. It is the job of the other teammate to describe the card without saying any of the words that are printed on it.
Build-A-Sentences
Students needs to begin with a basic sentences and add on to it
For example, let’s say the original sentence we give students is The dog barked. We can then ask students to build on to that sentence, one grammar concept at a time.
