Mechanism of Action
blocking of dopamine receptors so that dopamine can't bind/act like an antagonist
Uses
Reduces positive symptoms of schizophrenia; controls manic symptoms of schizoaffective syndrome
Administration Alerts
7-8 weeks to achieve therapeutic affect
IM injection: use outer quad of buttocks; have pt remain supine 30-60 minutes and rise slowly
Adverse Effects
Dizziness
Drowiness
Orthostatic hypotension
EPS; neuroleptic malignant syndrome
BLACK BOX WARNING
ELDERLY WITH DEMENTIA RELATED PSYCHOIS = RISK FOR DEATH
Drug-Drug Interaction
Use of phenobarbital & TCA = increase BP
use of anti-seizure medication = decreased threshold for seizures
Herbal Interactions
St. Johns Wort can increase risk for dystonia
Contraindications
Alcohol patients in comatose state
