Crooks
ACTIONS
"Crooks sat on his bunk and looked at the door for a moment, and then he reached for the liniment bottle."
This is the last thing that Crooks did in chapter 4 and it was after Lennie and Candy left his room. He watched even a little after they were gone because the feeling of inclusion still resonated with him and really opened him up. It also gave the reader a glimpse of his actual personality.

THOUGHTS
"Crooks stared hopelessly at her, and then he sat down on his bunk and drew into himself."
Crooks wanted to say something back to Curly's wife but he had to hold his tongue and use his self control to keep himself from saying something that will get him in trouble.
"Noiselessly Lennie appeared in the open doorway... For a moment Crooks did not see him, but on raising his eyes he stiffened and a scowl came on his face."
Crooks is used to the company from others and when the other guys on the farm are coming into his room it is usually either for something or to beat him for fun. This shows his guarded personality.
SAYS :
“’Cause I’m black. They play cards in there, but I can’t play because I’m black. They say I stink. Well, I tell you, you all of you stink to me.”
This statement from Crooks shows that he has learned to accept his the racism that he faces on the farm but also his insult at the about how they stink to him shows that deep down he really wants to be accepted by the other guys.
"“I seen hunderds of men come by...Nobody never gets to heaven, and nobody gets no land. It’ just in their heads."
Crooks seems to have been at the farm for awhile and not moved as much as others. He also is content to stay there because he believes that there is no way to achieve the happiness that they are holding onto in their heads.
POSSESSION & ENVIRONMENT
"This room was swept and fairly neat, for Crooks was a proud, aloof man."
He keeps his environment very clean and neat because he is a proud man and is not stooping down to what societal standards of him are.
"And he had books, too.."
Although Crooks works on a farm and does menial work, education and knowledge are still very important and reading is something that he enjoys.
EFFECTS ON OTHERS
Crooks said irritably, “You can come in if you want.” Candy seemed embarrassed. “I do’ know. ‘Course, if ya want me to.”
Crooks's has understandably put up a guard for himself and in dong so has shut others out of seeing his true self. This act of openness leaves Candy surried which makes him uneasy.
LOOKS
"His body was bent over to the left by his crooked spine, and his eyes lay deep in his head, and because of their depth seemed to glitter with intensity. His lean face was lined with deep black wrinkles..."
He has deep, lean, and a wrinkled complection from all of the labor that he has done throughout his life. Having a crooked back can impact more than just how you do things. Socially people will tend to look down at you as a disabled person and he is already looked down to because of his race.
