"Nobody never gets to heaven, and nobody gets no land
This quote shows that Crooks is pessimistic about actually being able to achieve their dream, like owning land or getting into heaven
"They'll take ya to the booby hatch. They'll tie ya up with a collar, like a dog."
-
"White kids come to play at our place an' sometimes I went to play with them, and some of them was pretty nice."
When Crooks was younger he would go out and play with the white kids because back then he did not fully understand the racial prejudice that came along with being black.
"Come on in and set a while, long as you won't get out and leave me alone, you might as well set down"
Crooks can be seen as defensive at times because almost everybody in his life looks down to him because of his race but he is actually a god human being.
-
"His body was bent over to the left by his crooked spine, and his eyes lay deep in his head, and because of their depth seemed to glitter with intensity.
Crooks is seen as inferior to other workers just because he is black but this is not the only reason. He is also disabled and his spine is crooked from being hit by a horse.
