Mask Project
2021:
Products
What would i do differently?
I would have liked to had the materials sooner as then we could have started making the masks sooner. This would have allowed more time and less panic towards the end.
I would have done sooner surveys, reach and more clear team communication so
That my peers and I weren't
On such a time crunch to get the products
Finish before the Christmas break.
If this pandemic didn't impact productivity as
Harshly. More of the group could have explore their skills in various ways for this project. But it was one of the main inspirations for this opening in the local market, but it wasn't with out its cons
I would try communicating better with my group
If I were to do this project again I would get the mask fabric sooner so there would have been less of a last minute rush. Because there was a last minute panic I felt that there was a lack of communication. In the future I would communicate better with my group.
The price for each mask was decided by the class to be €5 as the quality was very impressive and market worthy. But as it was a inconvenience to have expensive Mask for local, it was a compromise and the expected price generally on the market. People stated that on sale, pandemic masks could be as little as €3 and more said lower.
There was a small surplus remaining of masks stocks after all purchases and profits where completed.
The date we sold the masks was 18/12/20 a convenient time for TYs to sell the masks
Design
The template we used was the "Lucy Tierney" template. This template provided a breathable, fashionable and most importantly, safe design. This mask design/template turned out to be most popular.
The template provided a breathable and comfortable mask while at the same time provided safety for the wearer.
Process
I was one of the sewers who cut the fabric and sewed them together. I made the majority of my assigned masks at home with a sewing machine along with additional other masks in school. I was helped with cutting out the fabric and with the finishing touches for the masks.
Prior to the actual making of the masks, there was a lot of work involved in marketing, advertisement, sourcing of materials, assigning jobs and general discussions about the process.
Once the masks were made, it was time to advertise (further) them and start taking any pre-orders. Once we got pre-orders, the masks were packaged in zip lock bags which had labels explaining the qualities the masks held. The following day, the rest of the masks were sold down in the hall at break time.
Research
I searched websites online for mask designs
I also looked at mask fabrics
I searched online for the template that I thought would be easiest to stitch together. I also wanted to find a template that used a minimum of 2 layers of fabric to insure that the mask would be effective.
I also looked at various websites to find the best type of fabric to use for the masks. A 200 thread count white sheet was used for the first layer of the mask, and a cotton fabric with a Christmas design was used for the outside layer. The 2 layers of fabric insured that the mask would be safe to use.
Process, research
Once the fabric had arrived, I cut out the fabric using the template and stitched them together. Because some of the fabric was late arriving I made some masks at home, while the rest were done in school.

I was told that I had to make the poster striking and informative on the products on sell, and the where abouts of said products.
I made a 3D sketch of a generic pandemic face mask,
Colourful background and clear space for the details, price etc.
The backgrounds festive appearance was on purpose to further remind potential consumers of the specific use
Of this masks. A good quality mask with a Christmas gimmick.
I made the text whimsical but prominent on the poster to keep in the theme

Surveys were done to get a general idea of what type of masks people would like to wear.
I was told to make the poster because I drew a lot in 2nd year. I didnt draw so much over the covid break so I wasnt too happy with it
First I was thinking about how we could display the "little fingers" sign. And because it involved a lot of stitching I drew it as if it had been stitched into the paper. I also had to make sure I'd have enough space to show what our product was
Next I drew the basic, blank covid facemask. Blank so I could make changes to the structure without ruining design if I was dissatisfied with how its shape looked
