what he wanted to find out
he wanted to investagate whya stressful life events seem to lead to depression in some people and not in others
they then investagate whether stressfull life events were more likely to lrad to depression in people with a sertain varitaion in the seriotnin gene.
participants
they has 847 people
they where selected from 1037 people who where in a different study.
procedure
mesure 1- stressful life events
for each of the groups the stressful life events that occured after their 21st and 26th bithdays where recorded using life-history calander. the 14 life events included employment, finacial, housing, health and relationship stressors.
measure 2- depression
for each of the age groups at age 26, the depressive symptoms for the past year where assessed during hr diagnostic interview schedule. For each of the age groups at the age 26, and informant ( someone that they knew well) as asked via questionnaire about depressive symtoms for the past year for 96% of the participants
genes in the experiment.
gene 1- two short- 17%
gene 2- one long one short- 51%
gene 3- two long- 31%
conclusion
1- ther is a relationship between the 5HTT gene, stressful life events and depression
2- the long long version of the 5HTT gene seem to be more protected against suffering form depression because of stress
3- environmental stressors alone do not immediately lead to depression.
