coalition government created because pressures of war
liberal leader = David Lloyd George
coalition continues until 1922, ended because series of scandals
1900's Britain's position on worlds industrial power slipping.
America and Germany are big coopetitors in heavy industries (coal, ship building ad textiles
they had more modern and efficient machinery = thing cheaper to make = sell things for less
more sales from abroad
post war boom but Britain couldn't keep up with high demand
had to increase prices
Unemployment increasing in heavy industries
1925 joined the gold standard
Expansion and Welfare State
David Lloyd George thought of 3 ways to improve people lives
Housing and planning Act 1919 - replaces slums with new buildings, people believed solider deserved new better houses and better condition. Rents were lowered, 214000 homes were built
NEGATIVE = not many houses compared to population
Unemployment insurance act
dole system put into place to help people out of work, man people came home from work & did the a job. Dole system lasted 39 weeks, Men got 15 shillings (75p) women got 12 shillings (60p)
POSITIVE = better then nothing, NEGATIVE = just enough to get by, no extra income, seen as just a gesture becaue not many out of work so goveremnt could afford it.
Education Act 1921
school leaving age increased to 14, state primary education free.
IMPORTANT = made people more educated
Troubles in Ireland
Ireland divided by home rule and nationalist independence
Ireland rose against British wanting home rule but British had to put it off because of ww1
After ww1 nothing happened so resulted in Anglo Irish war (ended in 1921)
resulted in Anglo Irish treaty = 6 northern protestant states (northern Ireland) UK ruled and the rest republic Ireland were home rule
