Bio Psych: Adoption Study: Heston - The study of Schizophrenia
Aim
To see how many adopted children of biological mothers with Sz would go onto develop it themselves
Procedure
They were selected if their mother had
1) put them up for adoption
2) the mother had a diagnosis of Sz
3) Evidence of behaviour consistent with Sz
4) No diseases
5) The child + mother were separated from birth
Sample
47 exp ps (30 males, 17 females)
50 Control ps (33 males, 17 males)
Born between 1915 to 1945 with Sz mothers in an American psychiatric hospital
Results
Differences in:
psychosocial disability
Sz
IQ Deficiency
Quant Data
The rate of schizophrenia to those with schizophrenic mothers was 10.6% compared to 0% in those not born to Sz
Conclusion
Findings support the influence of genes in Sz and that there must be other factors influencing its development as some of the experimental group were successful adults
Generalisability
P: Small sample
E: 47 adopted ps from Oregon
E: Can't gen to other cultures
Reliability
P: Interviews followed a stan. pro.
E:
E: allowing replicability to test for consistency increasing reliability
Validity
P: High
E: conducted in a natural environment - ps home
E: Ps more likely to behave naturally, lowering, increasing ecological validity
Ethics
P: Good
E: contacted via letter asking if they'd like to take part, obtaining informed consent
E: Demonstrating good ethics
P: Poor
E: some questions asked were personal
E: may have caused distress
Application
This shows that there is a clear genetic link to Sz. Therefore, this can be used to develop research in order to prevent Sz from being passed on
