Masculinities in Development - Coggle Diagram
Masculinities in Development
Uganda struggles with a constant fight against hegemonic masculinity
Militarized Masculinity is ideal
Members of Parliament and even the President's wife participated in boot camp like trainings as a "get-away"
So ideal, the Church actively supports this form of masculinity
Homosexuality is constantly persecuted
SMUG (Sexual Minorities Uganda) protests against the government's involvement on homosexuality
Express that it is not an import from the West
"God made us this way." 'Let us live in peace."
Interfaith Rainbow Coalition Against Homosexuality (IRCAH)
Led by the Church
President actively stands against homosexuality
Actively had homosexuals investigated, tortured, and arrested
President also stands against Islam, yet many Muslims stand with him on his stance on homosexuality
Claims organizations like SMUG are simply asking for money and faking their sexual diversity
Gender violence and HIV at all time highs in developing countries
We can use Hegemonic Masculinity to look at ideas of power
We need to change cultural norms to bring gender equality
We need to politicize masculinities
cause people tp question the gendered relationships between bodies and identities
teach people about the structures of gender oppression
make men aware of their power and privileges in society
Developing countries must address heteronormativity, explore gender oppression, and accept diverse sexuality
