Jack's Hardwood Firewood: Distribution Channel Analysis
USE INTERMEDIARIES?
SHOULD I?
I won't consider using intermediaries in my business.
In my business, I'd prefer to be the only one delivering firewood to my customers.
I'd also prefer to be the only one representing my firewood when selling to customers.
WHY NOT?
I wouldn't want the responsibility of training distributors how to properly deliver firewood.
I also wouldn't want wholesalers in my business to deliver my firewood only to grocery stores.
There's so much to learn about firewood, and I'm worried that representatives might falsify about my product.
OTHER DISLIKES
One dislike I have is distributors may not always provide the best customer service.
I don't like wholesalers who sell my firewood in tiny quantities to many grocery stores throughout my area.
I do not like having to look out after intermediaries, even if they make mistakes.
BUSINESS GOALS
In my firewood business, I would like to deliver firewood directly to the customer's home.
If customers have questions about my firewood, I intend to be the one to answer questions.
If a customer orders a large wood amount, then the customer will get a large wood amount from me.
REALITY CHECKS
FIREWOOD SHOPPING
People who need firewood for the winter or for campfires shop for firewood in the local area.
People can find firewood for sale through social media or the local newspaper.
If there's word about someone who sells great firewood, people may buy firewood from that firewood seller.
DISTRIBUTION CHANNELS?
All of my top competitors use vehicles to deliver firewood to customers.
A new distribution channel that firewood sellers use is selling firewood at local stores.
Customers have two options: buy wood from someone who delivers firewood or buy it at the local store.
CHANNEL ADAPTED?
One distribution channel that could be adapted to my industry would be using a firewood-selling website on the Internet.
Customers could place orders on firewood bundles from a firewood-selling website and have the firewood shipped to their home.
The bundles could be delivered via UPS.
CHALLENGES?
Another challenge I expect is convincing customers to purchase firewood from my website.
A third challenge I expect is getting UPS to deliver firewood bundles to customers.
If I do decide to sell firewood on my own firewood website, one challenge would be generating profit off of my website.
MY SELLING?
My current method, which is using my truck and trailer, is very effective in selling good, dry firewood to customers.
Customers can either buy and have firewood delivered from me, or buy bundles on my website and be delivered via UPS.
I might use an Internet distribution channel, which is my website, to allow customers to order firewood bundles.
