Crooks
Actions
Crooks stood up from his bunk and faced her. "I had enough," he said coldly. "You got no rights comin in a colored man's room. You got no rights messing around in here at all. Now you jus get out an get out quick. If you don't im jus gonna ask the boss to never let you come in the barn no more." page 39
This quote is significant because it unravels another layer of Crooks character. It shows within him he has understood what freedom was like and tells us he wasn't always this timid, discriminated man. He has a brave, free side to him that he just isn't allowed to express. That he has to withdraw deep inside.
Crooks had reduced himself to nothing. There was no personality, no ego-nothing to arouse either like or dislike. He said, "Yes ma'am and his voice was tonless. page 39
Other than this quote showing clear discrimination that against Crooks, if you analyze it deeper you can see another character trait revealed. Some may say its respect or fear but I see him as smart. He understands after how he acted out he has to bring all that back inside him and put on this fake face. He has to not be himself for his own good and he is smart enough to know this rather than to continue lashing out.

Thoughts
The stable buck went on dreamily, "I remember when I was a little kid on my old mans chicken ranch. Had two brothers. They was always near me, always there. Used to sleep right in the same room, right in the same bed, all three. Had a strawberry patch. Had an alfalfa patch. page 36
This short part of the text gives the reader important background information about the character Crook. We learn some key things such as how he wasn't always this negative, miserable person. We learn he had a family and brothers and wasn't always this lonely man.
Crooks said darkly, " Guy's don't come into a colored man's room very much. " page 37
Crooks speaks this quote when he is talking with candy and Lennie. This shows how crooks feels. We can infer that he isn't used to being shown attention or care from others and he is just this outcasts that is always looking from the sideline. This thought shows the struggle he faces as man vs man and man vs society.
Effect on Others
Crooks bored in on him. "Want me to tell ya what'll happen? They'll take ya to the booby hatch. They'll tie ya up with a collar, like a dog." page 35
In this quote we see crooks, in a way, lash out at Lennie. This quote may reveal something deeper than just crooks being mean to lennie. It could resemble how all the years of hate and discrimination as affected Crooks as a person. It seems like this lashing out was caused by built up anger from deep inside and the desire to see a white man feel the pain for once.
Looks
He pulled out his shirt in back, Poured a little liniment in his pink palm and, reaching around, he fell slowly to rubbing his back. page 41
This quote reveals another challenge Crooks faces in this novel. He has a crooked spine which is another reason he is an outcast. Not only is he a colored man but he is also disabled. This starts to develop the character of crooks as a lonely, disabled, colored man who is constantly mistreated and misunderstood.
Say
“You got no right to come in my room. This here’s my
room. Nobody got any right in here but me.” page 34
This quote helps show us a part of crooks character that isn't as obvious as others. We see him get instantly defensive when innocent Lennie enters his living area. This shows how because Crooks is constantly discriminated against he instantly doesn't want much to do with any white man as if it is his instincts.
He whined, " A guy goes nuts if he ain't got nobody. Don't make no difference who the guy is, long's he's with you. I tell ya," he cried, " I tell ya a guy gets too lonely an' he gets sick." page 36
This quote expresses one of the major problems crooks faces that can have an affect on his character. We see he is deprived of social interaction and this quotes helps to express how he feels and maybe explain to the reader why he acts and talks negatively a lot.
