Identifying Students Needs
by Lauren Ayala
Has the student shown a change in behavior, interaction with classmates or in the quality of work?
No? Great keep doing what you're doing!
YES? Ok how can we help the student? Is the student frustrated, acting out or have they become more recluse or outgoing recently
What has changed?
Behavior and interactions with peers?
quality of work?
Regardless of what has changed the teacher should document it and seek help from support staff, administration and parents
Create a plan to support the student. Give "SMART" goals. Base these goals on where they are in relation to their peers and where you want them to be.
Try recommended modifications to see if anything is helping the student succeed. Minimum of 2-3 months. Give the student time to adjust to the changes to optimize observation of is it working or not. Report results to parents
If it's not working reassess the situation
make the necessary changes
potential changes
choice assignments
untimed assingments
a change in seat
quiet spaces to complete assingments
additional technology where a appropriate, i.e. an e-reader, text to speech devices etc.
If its working GREAT, you should continue with current modifications to help the student meet their educational goals!
*Every year or sooner the plan should be reassessed to see what is or isn't working.
