Positivist approach - Positivists see society as shaping the individual and believe that ‘social facts’ shape individual action.
uses surveys, secondary data analysis and experiments

surverys use mostly closed questions and choice is given of pre-defined options- Good if confirming a hypothesis but not if exploring emotions and attitudes.

interviews, observations- could be used to witness officers actions in the actual situation- however ethical implications.
Use of interview guide with some set questions, intevioewer has freedom to further explore responses. Usually organisted into topic areas.
Advantages- Access to atitudes and feelings, open ended and flexible, sensitive issues can be raised, Achieve depth and complexity. Allow participants to answer in their own words.
method- Questionnaire- May be less time consuming for the researching however it would potentially limit the repsonses given without researcher being there to prompt for further details.
sample - small- participants from two different locations. Bath and Broadbury.
