The story so far
Chapter 3
Baby is here. He has pale eyes and so does Jonas. Most people don't . Also, Jonas see an apple look weird for a bit.
Chapter 4
Jonas, Asher and Fiona volunteer at the house of the old and bathe a bunch of old people. It weird but they don't think it's weird. It's weird that they don't think it's weird.
Chapter 2
Jonas' dad is a nurturer. His mum is a judge. The family will temporarily look after a new baby at night (Gabe), but not keep him ("mum, dad, son and daughter" is the only legal family unit.) Also, Jonas' mum and dad are not his biological parents. No one knows who their bio-parents are.
Chapter 1
Jonas (our protagonist) is about to become a "12". He has a younger sister. The society has a bit of a obsession with language. He is about to find out what job he will be trained in for his future, and he has no idea what job will be chosen.
Chapter 5
Jonas has sex dream about Fiona. He doesn't know that it is a sex dream, but it's a sex dream. When he has to discuss his dreams and feelings at the family sharing, his parents see this a signal that Jonas has hit puberty and give him "the pills". Everyone who has begun and been through puberty takes "the pills" to suppress their sexual desire.
Chapter 6
Ceremonies begin. We learn about the concept of "Loss" (death). It is different to release. Gabe is getting another year as a newchild. Fiona gets a brother named Bruno.
Chapter 7
They skip Jonas. He is very worried about this. Asher and Fiona get good assignments (Director of recreation an Caretaker of the Old).
Chapter 8
Jonas is selected to be "Receiver of Memory". We don't know what the means. Jonas doesn't know what that means Apparently, it is important, and it will be painful. The selected someone else for the role ten years ago, and apparently something went wrong. The current Receiver has had the job for a long time.
Chapter 9
Jonas reads the rules for his job. They are odd. In particular, Jonas is permitted to be rude and ask any question of anyone he wants. He may not seek medication or apply for relief. Finally, Jonas may lie.
Chapter 10
Jonas meets the Receiver-in-memory. He starts to train him (but the training doesn't actually begin till the next chapter).

Apparently, Jonas' new job will require pain and suffering, but it is essential for the society. Are there any essential jobs in our society that require people to suffer? Should there be?
