Multiplication Strategies 4 X 12 = y - Coggle Diagram
Multiplication Strategies 4 X 12 = y
Repeat Addition
Doing 4 + 4...+ 4, 12 times is not as efficient.
Repeat Addition shows us what multiplication looks like with repeated, equal groupings
12 + 12 + 12 +12 = 48
4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 48
Break-Apart
(4 X 10) + (4 X 2) = 48
We can use what we know about 10s to help us multiply
This strategy allows us to use our favorite landmark numbers (10s, 5s, 2s, etc.) to solve what we know.
The trick with this strategy is to remember what we take apart, we have to put back together again to find the product.
U.S. Standard Algorithm
An Algorithm is just a set of rules that we follow each and every time we solve a certain type of problem. There is more than just the U.S. algorithm.
A great strategy to use once you understand what all of the notations mean. How you are regrouping the various place values.
Not always the most efficient strategy!
Skip Counting
There is less skip counting when you count by the larger number
We could also skip count by 4 twelve times: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40, 44, 48
Skip counting by 12 four times: 12, 24, 36, 48
I notice that all of the numbers in the skip count by 12 list are in the skip count by 4 list.
