Anticholinergic Therapy: Benztropine This drug is used to treat Parkinson's symptoms and extrapyramidal symptoms from antipsychotic drugs. The effects of acetylcholine are blocked and muscle tremors and rigidity are treated (which are caused by excessive cholinergic activity).
Side Effects: Dry mouth, urinary retention, constipation, dilated pupils and smooth muscle relaxation.
With Benztropine, it needs to be taken at bedtime, with increased fluids and away from other meds. Alcohol needs to be avoided in to reduce adverse effects and anticholinergic syndrome needs to be closely watched for. Symptoms of Anticholinergic syndrome include agitation and hallucinations, blurred vision, convulsions, dryness, and elevated temperature and heart rate.
