Aquaculture is the farming, breeding, rearing, and harvesting of plants and animals in water environments eg ponds, lakes, the ocean.
Half the seafood eaten worldwide is farm-raised. This is recognized as a necessary way to meet the seafood demands of a growing population. Hence, it is the fastest growing form of food production in the world. However, this causes loss of habitat, pollution from fish feed disease and parasite transfer, introduction/spread of exotic species, chemical pollution. eg increased prawn production is great for feeding people but has led to over 1/3 of the world's mangroves to be cut down = knock-on effects.
