CHILD < GROWTH & DEVELOPMENT
THE BRAIN
STRUCTURE & FUNCTION
Hemisphere of the cortex has four major areas called lobes
Occipital Lobes
Function in vision
Temporal Lobes
Role in hearing, language, processing & memory
Frontal Lobes
Thinking,personality & intentionality or purpose
Parietal Lobes
Spatial location, attention,motor control
NEURON
Neuron process information.
Axon sends electrical signals away from the central part of the neuron .
Synapse the axon communicates with dendrites of other neuron .
Synapse occurs through the release of chemical ( know as neurontransmitters )
Myelin sheath - A layer of fat cells and Help impulses travel faster along the axon .
THE INFANCY
Myelin -
In the process of encasing axons with a myelin sheath
Continue after birth
Improve information processing.
Occurs rapidly after the first six months.
Hearing is not completed until the age of 4 or 5 years .
The most extensive change
Dramatic increase in dendrites & synapses and brain development in the first two years .
Health
Nutrition and Eating Behavior
poor eating pattern as the beginning of development .
Parents do not give a balanced diet eg : fruits and vegetables.
babies store nutrients in their bodies
Exercise
Children need daily exercise
Improve physical fitness classes in schools
Children are not getting nearly enough exercise
Overweight children
Being overweight has become a serious health problem in early childhood
Childhood obesity contributes to a number of health problem .
Children increase risk overweight in adolescence and adulthood.
SLEEP
Sleeprestores,replenishes&rebuilds our brains and bodies
wake cycle
newborns , 16 to 18 hour a day .
10 hour to a high of about 21 hour range from a low . baby 1 month of age most have to sleep longer at night .
Childhood
That children do not get adequate sleep are more
Depressive symptoms
Have problem at school
Have a father in poor health .
Adolescence
Sleep as long as they loke.
Lack of sleep can lead to sleep deprivation
