Change vs. Progress in Art and History
Art
Literature (Progress->Change in behavior through more acceptance of new ideas)
Doll's House Play by Henrik Ibsen
Visual Art (Contemporary art) (Change->Progress; Evolution of styles and art movements are a form of change in genre which shapes art throughout history leading to continuous advancement However it can also be progress->change
KQ: How do we measure knowledge progress (advancement) in Art?
Pop Art was controversial because it was considered as it demonstrated American capitalism. American pop art emerged a few years after in UK in the late 1950s. This was a movement derived from commercialism which was prevalent after post-ww2. Amercan pop art fully emerged during early 1960s.
Duchamp's toilet shows how new development of art styles in modern art which have not been common in society is seen as controversial due to:
The value (does in increase or decrease) coming from a quality (everyday objects yet a toilet -- which is seen as substandard )
The ability to make art; reducing its validity and credibility (More effort and time=good art?)
American pop art can be then seen as Change or progress?
History
Japanese Colonization of Korea (Change-> Progress) This is based on perspective
Change: “To make or become different”. (Change is simply a change; does not have to be for the better)
Art: Cultural and social change through behavior; acceptance towards what is now considered the norm of art
"art reflects the thoughts and ideas of the society during a certain time"
History:
Progress: movement to an improved or more developed state, or to a forward position (something is getting better; subjective term) based on different perspectives
What is getting better in History and Art?
History: Social development; morality
Art: relatability and likeability (better at giving the message across to the audience)
Counterclaim: Maybe it is impossible to differentiate change and progress in isolation; it is interchangeable
Differentiation: - Perspective - positive and negative - Change is inevitable and progress is optional (requires movement; moving towards something to become better) - progress always require change but change does not always account for progress
