B207 Week 15 Session 10 Alternative perspectives to global innovation
10.1 An alternative perspective:
crossvergence
When a company innovates new ideas taking into consideration global culture and local needs. An alternative to convergence and divergence
innovation effect:
convergence and divergence; static in their innovation as "adopting" either a global or parent culture
Crossvergence = promotes innovation as it is producing new ideas to satisfy both needs. ADAPTS to the situation. influenced by and influences by context.
learn from different cultures and have integrative approach
10.2 The expanding organisational environment
organisations are multicultural even if geographically in one place as exposed to global events and trends = must respond to international pressures
cultural perspective required to be successful
provides opportunity to learn from and shapeother cultures
affects all business functions
operations adapt to diverse cultures
marketing tailor to different consumer bases
HRM coordinates strategy aka "multi cultural strategies" + deals with issues
can create organisational instability and lack of cohesiveness in norms and practices
Google and Facebook entering China market
had to learn:
different political, cultural and legal expectations
power relations - who made decisions + what is acceptable
own company values and priorities
new technologies for meeting china demands
Values
universal value to take advantage of new opportunities and maximise interests when possible
relative value = how far a company is prepared to compromise their values and ethics to achieve this
contemporary innovation / globalisation link
can be focused e.g. to meet a specific demand
can reinforce status quo e.g. innovation to meet demand of internet control rather than challenging the ethics of this
10.3 global knowledge, local needs
universalism vs relativism
universalism = one set of rules/principles for everyone
relativism = morally correct principles/rules are context dependant
Solution = Glocalisation
Glocalisation = "global culture" adapted to local context. HOW it is applied is important and provide opportunity for innovation
Power imbalances
"global south" must adopt the culture of the "global north"
smaller companies + less powerful countries = less ability to "glocalise", instead forced to adopt global cultural norms
Innovation
Innovate ideas for new global standards ALSO how to adapt existing standard to meet local needs
"The future of innovation lies in coming up with a global idea while at the same time showing just how diverse the application of this idea may be within different cultural contexts" OU reference
