Signaling Molecules and ligands
Describe the types of Signaling Molecules
Signaling molecules are hormones that can be grouped into 4 main types:
Amines: these are simple molecules
Proteins and peptides: made from chains of amino acids
Steroids: derived from cholesterol
Eicosanoids: these are lipid hormones
Eicosanoids
What are Eicosanoids ?
Eicosanoids are lipid hormones derived from polyunsaturated fatty acids, such as arachidonic acids.
They are broken down to form Prostaglandins, Thromboxanes, and Leukotrienes.
What type of cellular response do they elicit ?
Prostaglandins, Thromboxanes and Leukotrienes primarily regulate blood movement (dilation and constriction of blood vessels), regulate inflammation, fever promotion and pain.
COX inhibitors are NSAIDs, such as aspirin
