Differentiation From Pre-Assessment - Coggle Diagram

- - - - The students are about to begin the novel "A Monster Calls". The students will be analyzing figurative language in a creative fictional text as well as other writing mechanics, such as: theme, motifs, and character development. Students will receive a pre-assessment quiz during the first period of the novel studies unit asking them to identify and label a variety of figurative language and vocabulary and then rate their familiarity with certain writing mechanics. Should the students answer with a strong familiarity, the pre-assessment will then ask them to continue and answer follow-up questions to challenge their knowledge.
        
        The pre-assessment should take the entire first period. The following period will be a station-based lesson focused on differentiating the students based on the data from the pre-assessment.

        Novel Preview Activity - Working with Predictions
        
        In this group, students will be divided into 2 separate groups, but will work on the same activity. In each of the groups of 6 students, there will be 3 copies of "A Monster Calls" for the students to share in pairs. On each of the groups' tables will be a set of instructions directing students to look at the cover, the teaser on the back cover, the copyright page, the foreword, and the "About the Author" passage. Using these references the students are tasked to reflect on the year and country of publication and how it could influence the plot and characters. Then they will make predictions about the plot and possible themes that could present themselves in the text.

        Author Profile Activity
        
        For the students who have answered with strong familiarity with the content of the unit, they will be tasked to dive deeper into the motivations the author had to write the book.
